****This was a quick write up I did as a challenge for myself. I promise nothing in regards to readability or even usability. Hope it gets some gears turning though***

When players come to the edge of a county they might be met with a very potent force indeed. Buerocracy. How can they make it through customs, assuming they are not 100% up to code? Or perhaps they are and you just want to fuck with them.

 

Obviously waiting in line and filling out paperwork is not fun in real life. To make it feel like that but without the hair tearing drudgery is the problem. Potential solutions, math and word problems. Each time they solve one they get a littler farther. Draw a small line with 5-10 hash marks and hand out simple but basic tasks. As they solve them move their mini up a hash mark and describe what happened based on how long it took them. Set a timer and for every extra 10 seconds it takes a complication comes. They’re paper work is missfiled and now they are are no longer a citizen. They are accidentally put on a terrorist watch list. Etc

 

For the groups that prefer less simulative mechanics that matcth the feeling, the border is not porous. There are three stations, one they need to fill out a series of forms, one they must undergo some searching, and the last is an interview. 

 

This can be done in mundane, magical, or high tech settings. 

 

The simple version is a set of skill checks. The first bueracracy, intelligence, knoweldge, or forgery type skills. The second, dex, stealth, thievery skills if they are hiding something. They can also simply surrender all contraband or leave it behind. Interview is clearly bribery, cha, bluff etc.

 

But what if you are using s system without those skills? Lets say Appocalypes world. In this case you can’t really tell them what moves to use until people react. SO inteasd, we come up with 3 “moves” that can be pretty easily ported to different games

 

Forms presentation. When someone comes to the first station and does not present the requisite forms, the guard uses the Forms move. Roll + sharp(int, etc) on a 10 + hold 3 on 7-9 Hold 1. Choose

  • YOu completely understand the forms

– You have the background re quired to fill them out honestly and go through

–  You are able to complete them quickly

– You are privliged class and cannot be re-directed to special searching.

– You are a privleged class and can skip being searched

 

When someon gets past the forms they are searched, either by a machine, magic, or by hand. Assuming the player lets this happen, Roll + Cool, ON a 10+  YOu are able to get anything you want through and suffer no hassle. On a 7-9 You either get your contrarband through or are hassled. (hassled could do harm as established). On a miss, anything you have is found and you are treated roughly. 

 

On the last station the player needs to answer questions, but in addition to that, there are people watching. Roll + hot, On a 10 + no one suspects a thing and you are let through with no issues. On a 7-9 One of the interviewers takes a dislike to you and wants to hold you back.
